History of the Art Quilt
Have you wondered when the art quilt became its own category outside of traditional quilting? It's easy to see any kind of quilt as decorative, but there is a designated kind of quilt known as the art quilt. This happened in the late 1960s when two art collectors recognized that quilts could be abstract like modern art. They collected quilts that they thought were artistic expressions and soon were about to host an exhibition at famous museums. Soon after this exposition, Amish quilts were recognized by art collectors and sold as art.
For a while, art quilts were still not accepted or judged well by traditional quilt shows. A lot of quilters today have this same attitude, even though a lot of people see the special design that goes into making an art quilt. To many quilters, their quilt design is art and their art is quilting. It still may take some time for the art quilt to become recognized as a true art form, but many people can appreciate their beauty until that happens.
