Trailing Hearts Appliqued Button Down
Personalize your shirts and jackets! Bring new life to old clothes! The Trailing Hearts Appliqued Button Down is a pattern for making custom applique shirts with a design of heart and flower appliques that winds its way around the back of a shirt or jacket. Use green trim or cording for the vine that connects the appliques.

Primary TechniqueApplique
MATERIALS:
- 2-3 fat quarters for heart flowers
- 2-3 fat quarters or scraps of various green fabrics for leaves
- 1-3⁄8 yards fusible web product
- 4 yards cording or flat trim for vine
- 1 large and 1 medium size button for flower centers
- Cotton shirt of choice
- Accuquilt die cutting machine
- Accuquilt Heart-2," 3," 4" (55029)
- Accuquilt 5" x 10" mat (55110)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Cutting Directions:
- Apply fusible web to wrong side of selected fabrics following manufacturer’s instructions.
- Cut 1 —large heart from selected fabric
- Cut 4—medium hearts from selected fabrics
- Cut 10—small hearts from selected fabrics
- Cut 6—small hearts from shades of green fabrics
- Cut desired lengths of coordinated cording
Sewing Directions:
- Remove paper backing from appliqué shapes.
- Choose four hearts for each flower (1 medium flower and 1 small flower).
- Layout hearts with points touching on back and shoulder of jacket in random manner, using images as inspiration.
- Fuse each flower in place following manufacturer’s instructions.
- Draw vine connecting flowers with water soluble marker.
- Sew cording over drawn line, by hand or machine.
- Remove markings.
- Layout leaves with points touching cording and fuse in place.
- Appliqué edges of appliqué shapes by hand or machine.
- Sew buttons to flower centers.
