As quilters, we are often asked whether we are "traditional" or "modern." Oftentimes, this question comes down to whether we're currently sewing a dresden plate quilt the way our grandmothers taught us, or trying something new with some scrap fabric we found in our stash. But Quilting the New Classics: 20 Inspired Quilt Projects by Michele Muska asks, "Why do we have to pick just one?"

Quilting the New Classics takes the traditional patterns we grew up learning and breathes fresh life into them. Rather than breaking completely with the classic designs, Muska and her designers build on the beauty that's already there. In the "Bear Paw" collection, she gives us several different looks at the updated look. "A Long Winter's Night," designed by Darlene Zimmerman, evokes the feeling of a winter cabin buried deep in the woods, turning the bear paws into one another to create the sense of pawprints. "Berry Hunt," a modern bear-paw pattern by Elisa Sims Albury, plays with size and scope to give the sense almost that a mother bear is walking with her cub.

The idea behind Quilting the New Classics is that there's no reason to limit yourself either traditional or modern quilting. Quilting is an art, above all, so let your creativity flow with these joyful and stunning designs. This is truly a book that will be handed down from generation to generation.
