Modern Trees Table Runner

I love celebrating the holidays and decorating my house in bright Christmas decor. I also love the look of raw edge applique and thread sketching. Brightly colored fabrics and the thread sketching create a whimsical and modern table runner for your holiday table.

Cutting:

  1. Cut the background fabric into 3 strips that are 28 ¼” x 14” each.

  2. Cut a 3” strip out of 15 of the scraps and then subcut into 3” tall triangles using the 60° lines on your ruler.

  3. Cut a 4” strip out of each (30) scrap piece and then subcut into 4” tall triangles using the 60° lines on your ruler.

  4. Cut a 5” strip out of 15 of the scraps and then subcut into 5” tall triangle using the 60° lines on your ruler.

  5. Cut 15 scrap pieces for small tree trunks that are 1” x 1 ¾“.

  6. Cut 15 scrap pieces for large tree trunks that are 1 ½“ x 1 ¾“.

Making the table runner:

  1. Stitch the background panels together along the short edge with ¼” seam allowance. Press seams open.

  2. Place triangles 1 ½“ from the bottom of the long edges of the table runner leaving approximately ¼“ between trees. Alternate between the 4” and 5” triangles along the length of the fabric. Glue or pin in place leaving a small opening at the bottom for the trunk.

  3. Lay a 3” triangle on top of the 4” triangles 1 ½“ from the bottom of the 4” triangle.. Glue or pin in place to create the small trees.

  4. Lay a 4” triangle on top of the 5” triangles 1 ½“ from the bottom of the 4” triangle.. Glue or pin in place to create the large trees.

  5. Add a 1” x 1 ¾“ tree trunk to each of the small trees tucking the top edge under the triangles. Glue or pin in place.

  6. Add a 1 ½“ x 1 ¾“ tree trunk to each of the large trees tucking the top edge under the triangles. Glue or pin in place.

Stitching and quilting:

  1. Baste the top, batting and backing together to form a quilt sandwich.

  2. Attach Darning foot PD-H or Free motion quilting foot QC or QO. Use contrasting thread to outline the trees. I outlined each tree twice, creating organic drawn lines.

  3. Suggested quilting: horizontal lines using a snowflake stitch in white thread. Use AcuFeed Flex Dual Feed Foot to quilt. Place the quilting guide bar so that it sits 1” to the right of the needle. To create the stitch:

    • Press the program key.
    • Select quilting stitch 24.
    • Change the stitch length to 4.0.
    • Press the space key seven times.

  4. Quilt spacing the lines 1” apart.

  5. Trim around the edges.

  6. Cut five 2 ½“ strips to make binding. Sew together and attach to table runner using your preferred method for binding.
