Celtic Squares Block
The Celtic Squares Block is everything you'd expect from a Judy Martin pattern: elegant, unique, and understated. This quilt block tutorial ties various elements together, marrying the feel of a log cabin quilt block pattern with interlocking rings or even a rail fence quilt pattern. The knot design is surprisingly easy to put together if you follow the strip quilting techniques laid out in the tutorial. This quilt block is the perfect combination of a complex appearance without a complex process. Use the 11-inch block to make DIY table runners, baby quilt patterns, full bed quilts, and more. The design is simple enough to make a full bed quilt pattern manageable, but also lends itself easily to smaller projects. You can't go wrong with the Celtic Squares Block!

Who were the Celts?
The Celtic people lived during the Iron Age and Medieval periods in Europe and much mystery surrounds their origins. The first evidence of the term Celt came from Greek scholars, and many historians argue whether the term Celt was Celtic originally or if it was coined by the Greeks. However, the Celtic people consisted of various groups spread across the continent. Despite the distance between groups, the Celts maintained a common language and artistic style as can be seen above. Celtic art was very ornamental, avoiding straight lines, symmetry, and imitating nature, which was a common artistic style during the time period. Many of the Celtic symbols found in ancient artwork have religious or inspirational meanings, however, these symbols are difficult to decipher since there are few remaining written records from that time. Many people today consider themselves Celtic because of their ancestry especially in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and northern England. In fact, Gaelic culture is a direct descendant of Celtic. There are still some Celts out there, so keep the culture alive by making this beautiful quilt pattern!

I like this block as I can see how to convert it into a Crochet pattern for a throw. I have made a Crocheted Bargello "Twist and Turn" so am looking for more that I can convert. Thanks FionaA

I chose this pattern because I like anything "Celtic". Unfortunately, after I completed the block, I didn't like it enough to make more of them. Part of my problem was too many fabrics which made the whole thing too busy. I didn't want to throw it out and eventually it found a "home". I love it's "new look". This is the center panel of a "postage stamp" quilt I'm "building" from all of the scraps from other quilts I've made.

This block looks brilliant and if you say it is easy, I think that is my next Quilt block and I think I will make the quilt for my bed as I am the only one without a quilt, I always make them for someone else, hahaha. But this one is mine.thank you.

I have tried to put this together, on several occasions, and have decided, the measurements for strips is wrong. "E" should be 7" long, and "C" sometimes changes to 4". Please check these measurements on this pattern, and revise. I am running out of fabric.br br

Hi bcsmall14! Thank you for your message. This pattern was submitted a designer, and we have confirmed with her that the measurements are correct. If you need further hands on assistance, we would suggest taking it to your nearest fabric store or quilt shop. Best of luck, and happy quilting!

Why isn't there a printer friendly page for these directions?
FaveQuilts Editor MHS
May 27, 2014
Hi Serenadeinpurple! If you're having trouble printing, we suggest you highlight the text, then right-click on it. You'll get a window that gives you the option to "copy." Do that, and then paste the text into a word document. You should be able print that document that way. Another option is to highlight exactly what you would like to be printed. Then, select print from your drop-down menu, and change your print range from all to selection. Hope that helps!

Think the directions need to state what needs to be cut from background and what needs to be cut from feature fabric.

How about some fabric yardages for each of these colors? The directions are great but I have no idea how much fabric of each color I would need.
